All Around the Watchtower

All Around the Watchtower. A book review by Elliot Jackman

BY BEN HASKETT

Independent Author / Publisher

This is a short story by one of my favorite Independent authors.

This is a very intriguing short story about a crew aboard a ship that was sent out to scout a habitable planet. It seems that their mission did not successfully find what they had hoped, so they were on their way back to Earth.

They were awoken by the onboard computer to find themselves very far from their destination and on a collision course for an unknown object. The ship appears to have had some damage, from what, the crew can only guess.

They eventually reach the object and the ship is able to stop just short of impact. The story then revolves around the crew interactions. While most want to just turn and head back to Earth, one would like to stay for a while to study the object. It’s obviously of alien design and could hold secrets of technology that would be useful.

Since it is a short story, discussing details of the action and plot could easily spoil the fun of the read. I enjoyed the interaction of the crew and felt that the actions and interactions were very plausible. The revelations about the object they encounter, and theories thereof were also very interesting.

I hope Ben will consider writing an “After the Watchtower” sequel, so we can find out the results of the one crew member’s “big decision”.
